Anita Luisa Paillamil
Born August 12, 1976 in Nueva Imperial, IX Region of Araucanía
By the age of 8, Anita spent the afternoons weaving with her mother, learning the basic skills and ancient techniques. Due to her mother’s insistence, every day after school, beginning at 4pm, she and her sister would sit in front of the loom and weave as they watched all of the other children play outside. While it was a burden at the time, as she grew and became able to buy her own things, she realized the value of her home-based education. By the age of 12, Anita had learned independence – she no longer asked any money from her father, and purchased all of her own necessities.
Anita became involved with the Chol-Chol Foundation in 1993, and has since become a strong leader in the Ñimi Kafe Pu Domo Indigenous Association, serving as president for multiple terms. Anita’s involvement with the Foundation has enabled her to impart her wealth of knowledge on those women who were not as fortunate as she was to learn weaving at such a young age.
